ZONA ARQUEOLOGICA DE CALAKMUL
Zona arqueológica situada al sur del estado de Campeche, México, a 20 kilómetros de la frontera con Guatemala, en la zona de influencia del Petén. El nombre significa dos despegados cerros, que le fue impuesto en 1931 por su descubridor Cyrus Longworth Lundell; después las ruinas fueron estudiadas por el arquitecto Jonh Bolles. Esta zona forma parte de la Reserva Ecológica de la Biosfera de Calakmul. Esta ubicada a las orillas de un akalché o aguada de grandes dimensiones y está rodeada de otras pequeñas aguadas que se comunican entre sí por medio de represas y canales hechos por el hombre para almacenar agua de lluvia y regar cultivos.

El área urbana está planificada según el sistema de grupos dispersos, con espacios regulares entre los conjuntos. La zona arqueológica tiene una extensión total de 30 km., en ella se han localizado 6,252 estructuras, incluyendo templos y adoratorios, un juego de pelota, palacios y casas-habitación construidas con piedras labradas, lo que la convierte en la ciudad maya más extensa, estimándose que pudo tener unos 60,000 habitantes. Un camino o sacbé rodeaba la ciudad a manera de anillo periférico y otro más la comunicaba hacia el Norte.
Las características arquitectónicas de las construcciones corresponden al período clásico; el núcleo principal incluye una plaza alrededor de la cual se levantaron los primeros edificios; más tarde se construyeron estructuras encima de éstos y se añadieron otros nuevos, totalizando ahora 972, de los cuales 90 permanecen inexplorados, pero se consigna que más de 300 conservan sus bóvedas.
Su nombre significa “Montículos Adyacentes”, sus inicios datan de casi 300 años a.C., del año 250 al 750 d.C. fue llamada Reino de la Cabeza de Serpiente, e indiscutiblemente dominaba la región de las Tierras Bajas del área maya como “Dos Pilas” y “Naranjo” además de “Caracol” ciudad que hacia el año 500 d.C. fuera la aliada más importante de Calakmul en su eterno enfrentamiento con Tikal, poderosa ciudad maya del territorio guatemalteco. A la fecha se han encontrado en Calakmul mas de 120 estelas monolíticas labradas con registros históricos de esta importante ciudad. Sus dos edificios principales, los que le dan su nombre al sitio, se elevan por mas 50 metros por la superficie del suelo, sobresaliendo en la espesura de la selva.
La fascinación ha mantenido capturado a un grupo de arqueólogos que desde 1985 han trabajado sin cesar en la zona arqueológica maya más grande de toda mesoamérica, sus dimensiones día a día se van ensanchando y definiendo a medidas que se van revelando nuevos secretos de esta Ciudad Capital que llegó a dominar un gran horizonte.
