ZONA ARQUEOLOGICA DE DZIBANCHE
El enorme asentamiento conocido como Dzibanché ocupa una extensión de poco más de 40 km2 dentro de la que se localizan diversos conjuntos arquitectónicos de enorme monumentalidad y calidad constructiva. El nombre original del asentamiento se desconoce, y el de Dzibanché es el nombre con el que Thomas Gann bautizó al sitio durante su visita de 1927; significa literalmente “escritura sobre madera” y hace alusión al dintel de madera que aún se conserva en el Edificio VI.
Se trata posiblemente del asentamiento más grande e importante del sur de Quintana Roo, habiendo competido en dimensiones y poder político con sitios como Calakmul, en el vecino estado de Campeche. La belleza y monumentalidad de los edificios de Dzibanché documentan la complejidad del sistema sociopolítico maya de la región y constituyen un excelente ejemplo del desarrollo arquitectónico de la zona.
El sitio antes de comprender su funcionamiento interno y sus relaciones intercomunitarias, puede decirse que seguramente habría sido fundado hacia 200 antes de nuestra era, cuando se edificaron diversas plataformas y construcciones de material perecedero. A partir del Clásico temprano (200 de nuestra era), Dzibanché se convirtió en una gran ciudad e inició el desarrollo de los enormes proyectos constructivos que hoy pueden apreciarse en medio de una exuberante selva. A esta época corresponden la Acrópolis del conjunto Kinichná, el Edificio 1 o Templo del Búho y la primera etapa constructiva del edificio 11, o Templo de los Cormoranes, por citar los más importantes.
Se localiza 81 kilómetros al noroeste de la ciudad de Chetumal, capital del estado. Se accede siguiendo la carretera federal 186 Chetumal – Escárcega. En el kilómetro 58 debe tomarse la desviación de 14 kilómetros que conduce al poblado de Morocoy; continuar 2 kilómetros por el camino que va hacia San Pedro Peralta y doblar a la izquierda en el punto marcado por los señalamientos. El camino secundario pavimentado de 7 kilómetros parte de este punto y desemboca directamente al sitio.
