ZONA ARQUEOLOGICA DE CHICHEN ITZA
La legendaria ciudad maya de Chichén Itzá, Patrimonio de la Humanidad declarada por la UNESCO desde 1988 y Maravilla del Mundo desde 2007, está localizada al oriente de Yucatán, por la carretera a Cancún, a 120 kilómetros de Mérida.
Chichén Itzá fue fundada hacia el año 525 d.C., durante “la primera bajada o bajada pequeña del oriente que refieren las crónicas”, por los chanes de Bacalar (que después se llamaron itzáes) y más tarde aún Cocomes.
La imponencia de la herencia de los itzáes va más allá de la Explanada Principal, el Observatorio, el Cenote Sagrado, el Juego de Pelota y el Templo de las Mil Columnas. Esta zona arqueológica es poseedora de la obra más imponente de todas: la Pirámide de Kukulkán, donde dos veces al año, durante los equinoccios de primavera y otoño, el 21 de marzo y el 22 de septiembre respectivamente, un mágico juego de luces y sombras crea la apariencia de una serpiente que gradualmente baja por una de las escaleras de la pirámide hasta completar la emblemática serpiente emplumada. Ocurre lo inverso al atardecer los días del 20 al 22 de diciembre.
La Arquitectura de las edificaciones de Chichén Itzá muestran un gran número de elementos arquitectónicos e iconográficos que algunos historiadores han querido llamar mexicanizados. Lo cierto es que es visible la influencia de las culturas provenientes del altiplano mexicano, y la mezcla con el estilo Puuc, proveniente de la zona alta de la península, de la arquitectura clásica maya. La presencia de estos elementos procedentes de las culturas del altiplano fueron concebidas hasta hace algunos años como producto de una migración masiva o conquista de la ciudad maya por parte de grupos toltecas. Sin embargo, estudios más recientes sugieren que pudieron haber sido la expresión cultural de un sistema político muy extendido y prestigioso durante el posclásico temprano en toda mesoamérica.
El Cenote Sagrado de Chichen Itza, es un cenote a cielo abierto de 60 m de diámetro, con paredes verticales de aproximadamente 15 m del nivel del acceso a la superficie del agua y de 13 m de profundidad, que es aproximadamente el primer piso freático en esa zona de la península de Yucatán. En este cenote llamado sagrado, se realizaban ofrendas al dios Chaac, señor de las lluvias, que consistían en objetos valiosos y la tradición dice que también sacrificios humanos, generalmente de doncellas nobles, ataviadas con ropas ceremoniales y enjoyadas. En el cenote también se sacrificaban prisioneros de alto rango, también como ofrenda religiosa.
La Zona Arqueológica de Chichen Itza cuenta con un parador turístico con diversos servicios como cafetería, enfermería, librería y un auditorio donde se exhibe material audiovisual sobre diferentes temas culturales de la zona maya. También podrá encontrar artesanías hechas por manos yucatecas y visitar el museo.
Chichen Itza puede ser visitada todos los días a partir de las 8:00 am. hasta las 17:00 horas, y disfrutar del espectáculo de luz y sonido que se ofrece a las 20:00 horas en verano, y a las 19:00 horas en invierno, con traducción simultánea.
